Since the launch of Bipolar Beat, our Ask a Question page has solicited questions about bipolar disorder from visitors. We thank all of you who have taken the time to post a question and apologize to those whose questions we have not yet answered.
When we created the Ask a Question Page back in July of 2008, we mentioned that we could not answer all questions, offer diagnoses, or recommend treatment, but we would try to choose at least one question or issue per week to address in a weekly post. Well, that proved to be a little overly ambitious. Although we answered a few of the questions, we never really did the Q&A series that we had envisioned.
Today, that’s about to change. We are officially launching our new Bipolar Disorder Q&A feature. We’re not going to promise a Q&A every week, but we will try to do one every other Friday, starting today, until we run out of questions to answer. We hope you find these intriguing and informative. Let us know what you think, and please keep the questions coming, even if we don’t get around to answering them for some time.

Looking forward to the Q&A!
what can I do to improve my cognitive functioning which has deteriorated due to bipolar illness?
Is it common for cognitive functioning to be affected by bipolar disorder? A 26 year old family member (6 manic/psychotic episodes, not much depression) has retained her verbal skills, sense of humor and cleverness, but seems to have lost a lot of her ability to read or write simple sentences. How unusual is this?
Have any studies been done on the effectivenes of peer specialists working with Drs.; therapists; consumers & their families?
My girlfriend suffers from bipolar. She has been off medication for 2 years, but still takes an SSRI and hormone (pregosterone) which seems to have eased (masked?) some symptoms. She has exhibited extreme behavors that lead me (and a psychologist I consulted) to believe she is experiencing a major session. How do I get her to someone who will help? She has said before she will NEVER go back on lithium. And she believes the bipolar was misdiagnosed. i think she is headed to a major crash. Is that a good time to take control and find help? Thanks for any information you can provide.
I have a question about Levetiracetam. Its an anti-convulsant that has been used with BP. Any comments on its effectiveness and how it may differ then other anti-convulsants in terms of the symptoms it targets. My sense is that it has shown some effectiveness with maniac symtptoms. If so, can it be combined with say, lamictal, a drug that targets the depressive side of BP?
