Still Enjoying Christmas

By Leigh Pretnar Cousins, MS

I’m eating one Christmas cookie per day.

The mom of one of my students gave me a big box of her extremely delicious home-baked cookies, and I put it in the freezer. At the rate I’m going, I’m all set dessert-wise straight through January. Yum!

I decided this year that instead of even trying to decorate, send cards, etc, I’d devote my attentions to thoroughly enjoying and openly appreciating the efforts of the people around me.

I spend my days tutoring and consulting, driving from house to house through lovely New England towns. I never get tired of the scenery, and I especially adore all the Christmas decorations. So many people go to such trouble; why even try and compete?

Why not, instead, just notice…and take in…and compliment! Why not use some of that time I’m saving by not unpacking my own baubles and lights, to stand a few extra moments in each family’s doorway and examine in detail, and admire and remark about their lovely and  special decorations?

I’m also glad that in this part of the country folks don’t seem to be in a huge rush to strip all their holiday trimmings down as of Jan 1. Why not extend that holiday feeling at least into January, and really savor it?
