On Mondays (Luna’s Day) we share thoughts about animals and their value and meaning in our lives.
It’
s been two months now since Luna died, and our whole family still feels her loss keenly. We’re not, by any means, finished mourning her. We all still choke up when we talk about her or look at her kitten photos or the little tin box containing her ashes. (Even typing this brings on the tears for me).
But Life goes on and has it’s ways of nudging us forward right along with It.
About two weeks ago, Matt arrived at one of his student’s houses for a physics tutoring session. And there, in a cardboard box in the garage, was little Nika, rescued from a storm drain four days earlier.
So into our lives now comes little Nikola Tesla Cousins, named for Matt’s favorite physicist, and demonstrating one of my own observed laws of physics: Cats Abhor a Vacuum.
It is so poignant to think that during Luna’s last days, little Nika was being born. Luna lived, and now it’s Nika’s turn. Matt smiles at what appears to be his fate; this is his second chubby little cardboard-box-abandoned girl-kitten.
Was it time to get another cat? Were we ready?
Nika came along and made that decision for us. She’s a one-pound, black-and-white fluff-ball reminder that so much of Life isn’t within our control, and that sometimes that’s a good thing.
No thinking involved; all we had to do was embrace her.
How have you decided when it’s the right time to get a new pet?
