The Four Agreements for ADHDers

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel RuizI’ve always had a keen interest in philosophy, psychology, world religions, and any other kind of reading that might shed light on the big questions of Who Am I?, Where Do I Come From?, and What Is My Purpose?

I’ve been wondering if my current favorite, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, which has been on The New York Times Bestseller List for over eight years, could be specifically applied to my life as an ADHDer?

Ruiz was born into a family of Mexican healers, including his healer mother and shaman grandfather. Instead of pursuing a career in medicine, for which he was trained, after a near-death experience Miguel devoted himself to sharing the ancient Toltec wisdom of his ancestors.

Zoë's ADHD Pet Peeves: ADHD and DeathBefore I get into today’s Pet Peeve, I want to share an update from my September 1, 2010, blog post, Zoë Bears All: ADHD, Self-coaching, Dreams. In it I mentioned a dream that I’d had where there were lots of bears pursuing me. I also talked about using synchronicities (meaningful coincidences) as part of your Self-Coaching program.

Well, check this out: yesterday a baby Bear Cub wandered onto a children’s playground in the CITY where I live. This is a rare, perhaps unprecedented, event. Later that day, mama bear came thundering in looking for her babe. Go figure. If you don’t believe me, check out this article from our local daily newspaper: Cub caught, mama sought

Today’s He Said / She Said: Examining the ADHD Life, continues to explore the stress of de-stressing à la vacation, ADHD-style. Gather ’round the pool, pull up a deck chair, and enjoy!

10:27am Jeff: Have you noticed the interesting slide we’ve made from a discussion of vacation to a discussion of work? They are like opposite ends of a rubber band and each is moving in the opposite direction!!

One of the common threads amongst us ADHDers is that we tend to hold a number of different positions throughout our work lives. I admit that learning this was one of the most comforting things I found out after my diagnosis. I couldn’t understand why I was always changing jobs, why nothing “stuck.” At least, I knew I wasn’t alone.

You’re FIRED! …Make that, I QUIT!

I always felt like such a loser because I couldn’t make a go of anything. Instead of a career path, my work life was like a blender full of job titles with the button pushed on high speed. Dizzying, yes?

He Said / She Said - Examining the ADHD Life with Zoë Kessler and Jeff SiegelToday’s He Said / She Said: Examining the ADHD Life, explores the stress of de-stressing à la vacation, ADHD-style.  So get out your sunscreen, grab a Mai-Tai, lay back, and enjoy the trip!

9:56am Jeff: Well…I think I achieved a milestone in my life. I went on vacation and there wasn’t the usual vacation panic. Not sure how I did it…but somehow…I did. How was your recent vacation?

9:57am Zoe: Not so fast! I’m curious about this “wasn’t the usual vacation panic” bit. I think it would be worth it to figure out how you did that, don’t you? Did it have anything to do with the fact that it was actually a WEEKEND (i.e., Saturday and Sunday) and not what most people call a “vacation”? ha ha…

Kelly’s Pet Peeve: Lament of a newly-diagnosed ADHDer

Fifty years of undiagnosed ADHD have made me a pretty tough guy, but this last little while that I’ve spent becoming aware of my ADHD has left me exhausted from the realization of how I treat those around me.

Forgive me Lord, it’s been nearly two weeks since I wrote my last interim self-coaching report.

Yesterday, I tried writing down some concrete goals, with steps to achieve them. I forgot all about what I’d said in my last self-coaching post, and had no idea where to begin.

In the meantime, this morning I had a dream. It was a dream about bears. Lots of bears.
