Zoë’s Pet Peeves: Fear-Mongering to ADHDers

Zoë's Pet Peeve #9: Fear-mongering to ADHDersMy ongoing investigation into how we ADHDer’s are marketed to has borne fruit: the maker of one product I was investigating has temporarily taken down his site. The good news: he’s got a more affordable version of his product in the works. Hurrah! I’ll be looking forward to seeing the new offering in 12 – 14 weeks or so.

In the meantime, in writing Zoë’s Pet Peeve #7, on gadgets and gizmos and thing-a-ma-jigs, I’ve had a chance to hone my B.S. detector. I’ve also applied my training in logic and law to cut through the hype and get to the help.

ABC’s for ADHD

Talk to an adult with ADHD about their early school experiences. “I hated it,” they’ll say all-too-often. I’m not sure schools today would illicit a more positive response. Instead of adapting the school to the kid, the kid is adapted to the school, through Ritalin, restraint and ridiculously ill-suited pedagogical practices. Plainly put: school sucks for a lot of ADHD kids.

ADHDer’s gone wild?

In an online Business Week article called Smashing the Clock , a staff newly embracing ROWE (Results Only Work Environment) is described. Employees are variously going hunting, chasing rock & roll musicians around the country, or leaving at 2:30 p.m. to pick up their kids from school, amongst other un-work-like behaviors – all during their workday.

You’d think the company had been taken over by rampaging ADHDer’s.

While I was excited to hear about Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson’s ROWE crusade, I wonder if it will work with the non-ADHD population.
