There’s more to this than some people think

We all know about Distraction. I can’t even discuss ADHD without wandering off topic, thank you very much. It takes me away from so many tasks that I then discover I’ve left undone, only when I’m trying to concentrate on something else and am distracted back to them. Man, that’s disheartening.

We also know that we can be forgetful, or is it absentminded, or is it just another form of distraction. You know what I’m talking about. We’ll make an appointment, one we probably should have made weeks earlier, and then, satisfied with ourselves at this accomplishment, we’ll simply neglect to put it on the calendar. “How could we forget it?”, we’ll ask ourselves, “It’s such a big thing.”

But in our minds, the “big” thing is done, we made the appointment! We’re all like: “Who rocks? We do!”

And hyperactivity is also a big part of who many of us are. As I aged, I tended to climb trees less, and internalized my hyperactivity more. I bounce in my chair, drum my fingers, tap my pen, and flip from screen to screen on my phone. I don’t go at warp speed, well, not as much anymore. But my hyper never went away, it just went underground.

But there’s more to this than just … that

What else is there? If you have ADHD, you have an increased chance of being left handed. It’s true, though we don’t know why. If you aren’t left handed, you might also not be right handed … all the time. If you have ADHD, you have a better chance of being mixed-dominant.

On the other hand

Mixed-dominant is not the same as being ambidextrous. Ambidexterity is being equally competent with either hand. Mixed-dominant is using your right hand predominantly for some things and your left hand predominantly for others.

Just sleep on it

If you have ADHD, you’re more likely to have sleep disorders or at least issues. This too, is known, yet not understood. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have ADHD if you don’t have sleep issues, it just means that you are more likely to have sleep issues if you do have ADHD.

What are we learning here?

You are more likely to have one or more learning disabilities if you are one of us. This includes Dyslexia, but is certainly not limited to that.

“The doctor will see you now”

You have a greater chance of being injured in an accident. That’s not really a symptom, more of a statistic, yet it is a health issue so I’ve included it here.

Along the same line as the accident thing, is the fact that you are more likely to have poor oral hygiene. I don’t mean you’re more likely to swear, though I’d be willing to bet you are … I mean you’re more likely to have dental health issues.

It’s just a scratch …

We’ve barely scratched the surface here. I’m sure that there are other note worthy distinctions that we could list, but in truth, I’m getting a bit depressed. I’m going to leave off here and maybe pick up where I left off another time.

And I’m somewhat unhappy that I didn’t have time to list the good things, so there’s a good chance I’ll be writing about that sometime soon as well … if I remember to.
